4 Seasons Over 65s Tournament @ Cheshunt – Round 1
A fine, dry and bright Friday morning saw the Watford over 65’s (and a couple of 64 and ¾), turn up at Cheshunt for the first round robin event of 2020.
12 teams split into 2 groups of 6. Our group included teams from Northampton, Norwich, Essex, Leyton and our local rivals at Barnet. We made our customary slow start but managed to scrape a 0-0 draw. Our second game was slightly better when we played an Orient B team who had lost their first game 6-0 to Barnet. However yet again, our lack of clinical finishing resulted in another 0-0.
Then came our local derby against Barnet A, who are a very strong outfit. This seemed to inspire our lads and with 2 well taken goals from Paul Currie together with a great defensive display, we ran out worthy winners 2-0. A very satisfying result
Game 4 saw us play a tight 0-0 with a good Norwich team. The final game resulted in a fine 1-0 victory with another well taken goal by Paul.
We therefore finished with 2 wins and 3 draws without letting in a goal, but still finished second on goal difference.
The games were all played in a wonderful spirit and to see 100 old geezers playing football with smiles on their faces was brilliant! The world may be in turmoil but for those few hours Coronavirus could bugger off!
No blue cards, No red cards. No punch ups and No arguing…how refreshing! Well organised and well refereed.
Take a bow Colin Sills, Ken, Steve Morris, Pat, Richard Wober, Michael Smith and our player of the day – Paul Currie. Player/manager – Al Cutter
