FA Peoples Cup Success : 23-Feb-19
23rd February 2019 (report by Glenn)
Watford WFC entered 3 teams into the FA Peoples Cup – Walking Football. The regional qualifier was held at Goals, Ruislip on Saturday 23-Feb-19. Teams were Walkers (Michael Adams), Hornets (Glenn Cato) and Amigos (Steve Harrington).
The 11 teams included 3 from Barnet FC, 2 from Barnet RIP, and one from each of QPR, Bounds Green and Enfield. Two qualifying groups were organised. A group of 6 teams including The Walkers in a “group of death” with Barnet A, QPR, Bounds Green and the unknown Enfield, with the Hornets and Amigos in a group of 5.
The Walkers group was very tight with a point separating the top 3 with the Walkers coming 3rd on goal difference to Enfield and a point behind Barnet A. 2 wins, 2 draws and a loss. It was that close.
In the second group, the Hornets Squad was:
Grant Proudfoot (making his debut)
Paul Griffin (making his debut)
The Hornets first game v Barnet Red. Result 4-0.
We made a good start pressing Barnet deep into their half. This resulted in them succumbing to our pressure by scoring an OG. After this we played the rest of the game in full control with Grant grabbing a hat trick a fabulous start in his opening game.
Second game v our own Amigos. Result 5-0
Unfortunately The Amigos did not have a designated Keeper so was shared between Paul Vinton and Steve Harrington. Due to this it was going to be a tough day for the Amigos. The Hornets scorers included Grant (3), Paul S and Tony
Third game v Barnet Blue. Result 6-0
Scorers included Howard (3 including must of been the goal of the tournament), Grant 2, Gary. A fabulous result but quickly the shine was taken off due to a tackle resulting in Paul S being carried from the pitch. He watched the rest of the games from the side lines not knowing until he went to the hospital later on. He had broken his right ankle and will be out of action for months. Everyone at the club wishes Paul a quick recovery.
Fourth and last group game v RIP. Result 1-1
Howard our scorer. We knew we had qualified for the semi-finals so played within ourselves due to playing two games in a row.
Semi-final vs. Enfield Final Score 2-1.
So the Hornets topped their group and played the 2nd placed team from the other group in the semi-final. There was nearly an hour wait between our last group game and the semi-final. Fortunately this did not affect us we played Enfield and opened the scoring with a superb strike from Gary from 20 yards which flew into the corner. This jolted Enfield into pressing us back resulting in them grabbing an equaliser. Then Kevin made a fabulous save to keep us level after this we took control of the game and i felt was only a matter of time before we scored. Than Grant (or now known as Aquero) grabbed our second goal. After this we managed the game very well.
Final vs our local rivals, Barnet Black/Amber. Result 1-0 Grant (pen)
Always a battle against Barnet they lost the Final last year to Will’s team so were not wishing to lose to another Watford team. We started the game very well with the Barnet keeper pulling off some great saves and also having help from his posts which we kept on hitting. Than the break through due to our pressure one of their defenders went into his area so a penalty. Grant dispatched it in the corner with ease. After this it started to get feisty with some unnecessary challenges. All this resulting in making the game scrappy. Kevin was not troubled by any Barnet attacks. Than the final whistle. We thoroughly deserved our victory.
A fantastic squad performance the only downer is Paul’s injury.
The Second round is on Saturday 23rd March.
