With under 50 Rob the squad was still and average age of 60 y 1 mon!  (note the much younger Orange squad of 58 y 11 mon!).

The Yellows played with Kevin in goal throughout and rotated the 8 outfield players in quarters.  We were fortunate to have Michael Adams come down and provide some before each game coaching, and guidance from the touchline. Michael encouraged us to play a 3-2-1 formation.

Playing first against the stronger Hemel team, Greens, we took a look with Gary and Paul as subs. A first half of backs to the wall finding it difficult to make progress was broken with a cracking shot by Rob against the upright.  Their centre forward was giving Ken and Richard a tough time with his speed of turn, one of which was so quick Richard flattened him by accident!  At half time 0-0 felt like a win.  The second half had more quality and the team played better more than holding their own in a more equal game. 0-0 it ended, primarily due to Kevin’s first half performance in goal.  Thanks to Will McCafferty for refereeing.

And so on to pitch 2 to play Hemel Reds with Andy Roads in their squad – there was a faint taunt of “Judas” from somewhere haha.  Continuing to rotate the outfield players the game was a much more even affair broken by some very quick and clever thinking by Gary on a free kick just outside the box with a sweet finish by Steve Moss.  A 2nd Yellows goal almost came with Rob put through but “intervention” by Andy put a stop to that and Yellows could not take advantage of the subsequent free kick.  The game stayed that way with Yellow ending 1-0 winners and Kevin continuing to provide a safe pair of hands.  Thanks to Bill for refereeing again.

So a good day with a draw and a win.  Player of the day = Kevin Schmid.

Also of note was the highest spectator attendance ever for a Friendly with Rob’s family, Trevor Blake and Ged Mclaughlin. Including Will, Bill, Michael and Andy we had 23 WWFC members in attendance, almost half the club!

Thanks to Glenn for arranging the matches.

Hi all

Today we welcomed two teams from Hemel Hempstead to a sunny Meriden.

Our two squads were:

Jonathan Sands
Gordon Sexton
Lakhi Nijjar
Malcolm Wright
Steve Morris
Graham Bell
Tony Bartolo
Howard Groves
Glenn Cato

All the four games were played in a respectful and fair manner.

And expertly officiated by Bill and Will.

The Oranges first game was against Hemel Reds.

The Oranges started the game very well not allowing the Hemel team to get any rhythm.

After several misses and good saves from the Red team keeper the deadlock was finally broken. A well worked team goal finished off by Howard Groves a superb composed finish!!.

Half Time 1-0

The saying of a game of two halves certainly came true.

All the good positive play in the first half just stopped and before the team knew where they were. Hemel had scored 3 goals.

Full Time 1-3

The Oranges Second Game was against Hemel Greens.

Again started the game very well with several good chances created.

Than 2 quick goals from Hemel were conceded

Half Time 0-2

Second half a similar pattern with the Oranges conceding a further 2 goals.

Full Time 0-4.

Even from the two defeats there are positives to take forward into the next friendly.
