This month saw WWFC resources stretched to the limit by the Middlesex West Over 50 & 60 league at Uxbridge being postponed a week due to the Bank Holiday.  Nonetheless, the 5 team managers and coordinators worked tirelessly for a week to ensure all 5 fixtures were fulfilled, and club players introduced to the leagues for the first time.  Well done managers!!!

Hornets (Championship) (report by Glenn)

A few days before the meet the Hornets squad only had 5 players available. Thankfully Mark and Russell were added so we could at least assemble a squad of 7.

Allan Carrington
Gary Shaw
Glenn Cato
Kevin Schmid
Mark Bagley (making debut)
Russell Grove (making debut)
Tony Beal
Upon arrival we discovered Bicester Fossils had failed to turn up due to concerns playing on grass instead of the usual Astro Turf.
TVL awarded the 5 other teams in the Division a 1-0 victory against Bicester Fossils.  The 4 games we did play were extended to 12 minutes instead of the usual 10.
First Game v Wycombe Wanderers A  0-0
With our natural goal scorers unavailable we were aware scoring would be at a premium.  We created several good chances, unfortunately we were unable to break the deadlock especially against a very good Wycombe goalkeeper.
Second Game v Chiltern/South Bucks West 1-0 (Gary pen)
A similar pattern to the First game we created several chances again unable to convert.  A Chiltern defender fouled Glenn on the edge of the penalty area in doing so encroached into the area. The referee awarded a penalty which Gary dispatched sending the keeper the wrong way.  We than controlled the game until the final whistle.
Third Game v South Reading 1-1 (Gary)
We conceded an early goal. The ferocity in the shot nearly made a hole in the net. It was a super strike Kevin had no chance in saving it.
What pleased me was our reaction in these quick games if you concede the first goal you really are chasing the game and not playing your usual football.  We did not panic we created several chances with the Reading defenders committing several last ditch challenges resulting in free kicks just outside the penalty box.  With one of these free kicks Mark laid it back to Gary who calmly side footed it into the net a good goal. After this both teams were going for the win. Kevin pulled of a remarkable double save similar to Jim Montgomery’s in the 1973 FA Cup Final so rightly all the spectators and players applauded Kevin’s acrobatics.  After a few more chances at both ends the final whistle blew.
Fourth Game v Cherwell 0-1
As per the previous 2 games with Cherwell this was another close fought game.  There goal was a well worked team move finished off with a fine strike from their number 7.
Congratulations to Cherwell who will be crowned Champions at next months meet.  Deserved winners they have been very consistent and play good football.  From our point of view for various reasons this Spring/Summer League we have been unable to field our strongest squad. Under the circumstances we will finish runners up so a super effort from ourselves.   Well done to our squad which included Mark and Russell making their debuts at Bisham.  A great effort from all.
