23rd March 2019 (report by Glenn)

We all eventually managed to find the venue not before seeing the rest of Wimbledon first!

Upon arrival we discovered a few teams had pulled out so 5 teams were competing for a place in the finals:
Barnet Black/Amber
Hertford Town
Watford Hornets
Wokingham & Emmbrook United
The games were 18 minutes long!  All playing each other once with the bottom team going home with the rest playing semi-finals than a final.

First game v Portsmouth. Result 2-1 (Grant 2)

Portsmouth were a good team with very physical players.  I am always concerned with the first match in tournaments. We discussed the importance of starting the game quickly and my concerns quickly vanished we started really well playing some excellent possession football creating so many chances I lost count. The Pompey keeper was outstanding my thoughts went back to England v Poland 1973 Jan Tomaszewski (haha!). Surely with all the chances we were creating it was only a matter of time before we scored. Grant unleashed one of his thunderbolts which flew into the left hand corner. Than we scored again, a good move finished off by Grant. They grabbed a goal back from nowhere but we managed the game very well until the final whistle. A good start!

Second Game v Wokingham. Result 0-0

We know they are a good team from the TVL.  They play good football in the right spirit!. The game flew by with both teams cancelling each other out. I believed this would be the team to beat to get to St George’s!

Third Game v Hertford Town Result 2-2 (Grant 2)

This was our third game in a row without a break. We were not as sharp as the previous two games. Both our goals were good team goals finished off by Grant.

Fourth Game v Barnet. Result 2-0 (Howard and John)

After a break which we needed!  We played a very controlled game and won the game very comfortably.  Again both our goals were good team goals finished off by John and Howard.

Of the 5 teams who played on the day, Barnet were the team to go home early.

The semi-finals were:
Wokingham v Hertford
Watford v Portsmouth.

I was surprised Hertford beat Wokingham 6-5 on penalties after a 2-2 draw.

Our semi-final v Portsmouth. Result 2-0 (Grant and Howard)

After our first game, Portsmouth continue a play a physical game.  Their keeper again was outstanding making some incredible saves.  We eventually broke the deadlock with a fine goal from Grant.  This was followed shortly by one of the Portsmouth players trying to headbutt Grant and he was immediately dismissed.  The Portsmouth discipline then broke up and added a further good team goal finished off by Howard.

Final v Hertford Town. Result 3-1 (Grant 2, Laurie)

We played well controlling the game from start to finish.  Good team goals finished off by Grant and Laurie.

So ST GEORGE’S here we come for the finals next month!  A good day for the Club!
