WFA Cup: Over 60s – Watford Amigos Through to Round 2!
16th May 2019 (report by Jonathan Sinfield)
Under the floodlights this evening Watford had to navigate the tricky challenge of an away tie at local rivals Luton.
Jürgen Sinfield, the Amigos Player/Manager made some bold decisions in terms of team selection giving a debut to the youthful keeper Richard Cable aka ‘Safehands’. Richard only turned 60 earlier this month! And again, the surprise selection of George Ferrar who most pundits thought would be side-lined for a further month following a recent incapacitating shoulder injury. Both players justified their section and young Richard kept a clean sheet aided by defenders Mick Harty and Richard Manning. Two outfield subs kept the Amigos on the pitch focused at all times.
Amigo’s efforts were rewarded with a superbly taken first half goal from Simon Evans who linked well with George.
There were times in the second half that Luton could not get out of their own half with Will McCafferty and Paul Currie in midfield keeping up the pressure.
The last ten minutes saw a robust effort from Luton who met a Yellow Wall as our Amigos stood their ground. Late on, with the clock ticking, the Luton Captain collided with a determined Jürgen, it was said the Captain started on pitch 7 and landed in pitch 5, the roar of the crowd could be heard as the ‘innocent’ Jürgen on hearing the referee’s whistle asked ‘which way Ref?’!
So our Boys celebrated their 1–0 victory in the company of Luton’s Director of Football Arthur Mason who applauded the Amigos and looks to strengthen ties between locally based clubs.
Your Amigo’s second round tie will be played early July.
A commemorative shirt will be made available to the highest bidder once Richard M has completed his washing duties. Thank you Richard.
