WWFC Play in North vs. South Matches in Leicester
08-Dec-19 (report by Gary Shaw)
Watford WFC 60’s team along with Norwich and Bexley (Leyton Orient pulled out) represented the South against 4 Teams from the North at the neutral venue, “Goals Leicester“. Typical of “goals” locations, the pitches were boarded. Four 6-a-side, 20-minute matches against each of the Northern teams.
All 4 matches were very physical hard games. Generally, the North teams were much better 60’s teams than we have played against in past tournaments. In saying that, while games were closely fought, our results did not go as well as we hoped.
The 1st game, was against the national champions Blackburn (we had played them in the group section of the WFA Cup finals in Worcester where we drew all 3 games and were eliminated – Blackburn going on to win the title). Another very close match ended 0-0.
The 2nd game was against Redcar where we unfortunately conceded a very early goal and could not find an equaliser. I would say Redcar deserved the victory over the 20 minutes.
The 3rd match against Sheffield was probably the most physical of all the 4 games, but we played well and finally scored some goals in a 2-1 well-deserved victory.
The 4th game was against Grimsby, and after going ahead 1-0, we seemed to take our eyes of the ball and all of sudden we were 3-1 down. We managed to pull one back but ran out of time for an equaliser.
Of the other 2 South teams, I think Norwich won one game and drew 3, Bexley lost and drew their games. So the North beat the South and won the cup.
